Story of the artwork and its origin
Pen drawing was the second of the techniques I learned; the first one was graphite, or pencil drawing.
Here I have borrowed Lovecraft’s motifs as the basis of my artwork. I had been trying to collaborate on book projects for a long time. The first and second failed projects were Necronomicon-oriented. I had the task of preparing a series of illustrations for the planned Czech edition of the Necronomicon. In the end it turned out that the person who asked me for artistic collaboration was pulling your humble artist’s leg. In eleven years, he’d written at most a one-page introduction.
What are you seeing in this artwork?
Cthulhu as described by Howard [Lovecraft] is supposed to be a giant creature that is also a Great Old One god, resembling something between a dragon and a giant squid. He is supposed to be synonymous with evil, a god who wishes nothing but the destruction of humanity. The author does not elaborate on how, but in Lovecraft’s world this god attracts a big number of insane worshipers, whom the Great Old Ones generally do not mind having. It is as if the evil of the Great Old Ones were magnetic and impossible to resist. They pull their followers into their realms, consume or transmute them, all in Howard’s very gruesome style without mercy or even a hint of optimism.
In this particular piece, I chose not to portray Cthulhu as a giant creature but as a hideous tentacle-like force that permeates its worshipers throughout. Here is the result.
