History and origin of the work

Compared to the previous renditions, this Helja is mad, deriding, and very dangerous. It is not intended to mock this deity in any way, I wouldn’t even dream of doing such a thing. My intention was to capture my own experience of dancing with the death, when more than once, looking into its face, I truly realized what life was all about and how often we humans have petty ideas that we tend to take far too seriously. Despite the sharp portrayal, I perceive this death-goddess in a very positive way, as I believe that the myth of hers conveys great knowledge showing how little our countless problems, ideologies, or personal resolutions , mean in the face of death.

We all come into contact with death, if only because decease is inevitable for all of us. It also happens in life that some of our relatives or friends leave this realm for eternity. For me, what has helped a lot was following my heart; doing things that I don’t enjoy or want to do is, on the contrary, makes me lose strength. Death and its inherent presence throughout my life have made me confront myself and dig into the essential life questions of who I am, whom I want to be, and what I want to do from the point of view of my innermost essence. Death has shown me that nothing matters above mental well-being and true joy from life. Death has shown me that I desire to be and one day die, if possible, a good person. This is why I praise death and believe that death brings life. To this goddess, despite all the horror she carries and causes, I am hereby immensely grateful.

A short poem of my own creation for the artwork

Upon touching the death
the young girl
promptly saw
that among the dead,
she was not wanted.

Goddess of Death Hel

(A loud, mad, mischievous laugh should precede as an introduction.)

I burst out laughing at those living bodies without souls,
burst out in contempt if you are one of them.
Come closer, see the unseen beauty,
before
you dare to kiss the lady-ghost.

From the cold of the storm of self-pity
Should I sink into your damaged eyes?
Should I lick at the remaining cold blood from the heart
And smack as I ingest the essence of life?

Raise your eyes
And stare in the face of death!
You are the freak here,
Asking yourself the sweetest favor:
“End it!”

Is the world too pretty or too ugly for you?
Do you want to beg and shout my name?
Exultant, you unconsciously crave demise!

Not everyone will get the privilege of dreaming in my realm,
So I will take the liberty of feasting on some souls.

And as the final moment comes, should you see at me at last,
Azure white,
Or rotten black,
You’ll know a valuable life
From dull decades of wasted time.
